Overview

One of just 249 examples produced for the year, this 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster embodies the final evolution of the legendary W198-generation SL with provenance all its own. The 300SL Roadster marked a meaningful progression from the iconic Gullwing Coupe, featuring a revised tubular spaceframe allowing for conventional doors alongside improved rear suspension geometry, raised compression, camshaft tuning, and more.  Chassis 002520 benefits from status as a “tourist delivery” US-specification example first received by Milan, Italy Mercedes-Benz dealer, Carlo Saporiti. Acquired in 1961 by noted economist Charles Dufton, who served in President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration, the car remained in Dufton family ownership for over five decades.

Distinguished ownership, enthusiast care, and eligibility for a host of premier historic rallies underscore this Mercedes-Benz’s future-proof collector significance. During a comprehensive refurbishment completed in 2017 by marque specialist Almar of Poland, this example was refinished from its original White to an elegant Anthracite, complementing its timeless lines. Details such as body-color steel wheels with chrome trim, North American-specification lighting, and both soft and removable hardtops contribute to its authentic and well-appointed presentation.

The cabin was restored with equal attention to detail, now trimmed in Beige leather paired with coordinated square-weave carpeting. Period-correct instrumentation, including a 160-mph speedometer and 7,000-rpm tachometer, sits ahead of an ivory steering wheel, reinforcing the car’s purposeful yet luxurious character. The odometer was reset during restoration and currently displays approximately 1,076 miles, with total mileage unknown.

Power is provided by the renowned 3.0-liter M198 inline-six, featuring Bosch mechanical fuel injection, dry-sump lubrication, and Roadster-specific enhancements including dual-point/dual-coil ignition. Rebuilt as part of the refurbishment, the engine delivers output through a 4-speed manual transmission and upgraded 3.25:1 rear axle, while independent suspension, servo-assisted drum brakes, and Michelin XWX tires ensure a period driving experience befitting its racing-derived origins. Accompanied by extensive restoration documentation, fitted luggage, tools, and matching hardtop, this exceptional 300SL Roadster offers a rare opportunity to acquire one of Mercedes-Benz’s most celebrated postwar icons.
