1962 | Volkswagen Type 2 23-Window Conversion
Overview
The Volkswagen Type 2, commonly known as the VW Bus, Kombi, or Microbus, was introduced in 1950 as Volkswagen's second model following the success of the Beetle (Type 1). Conceived by Dutch importer Ben Pon, who sketched the initial design in 1947, the Type 2 was aimed at providing a practical, spacious vehicle for both commercial and passenger use. Its distinctive, boxy shape and rear-engine configuration became iconic, making it a symbol of the 1960s counterculture movement. The Type 2 evolved through several generations, including the Split-Screen (T1) and Bay Window (T2) models, each beloved for their versatility, durability, and quirky charm. Production of the classic Type 2 continued in various forms worldwide, notably in Brazil until 2013, cementing its legacy as an enduring automotive icon.
This 1962 Volkswagen Type 2 started life as a Kombi van and has recently undergone an extensive mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment in which the vehicle was converted in the style of a 23-window bus. Work involved updating nearly every aspect of the van, including a repaint in two-tone blue and white, installation of an F-code 1,300cc engine, 4-speed manual transmission, Custom Concept Racing aluminum fuel tank, sliding white canvas ragtop, interior bench seating, Bendix Sapphire I radio, and 15" Coker Classic white wall-style tires. A second set of 18" wheels will also be included in the sale. Now showing fewer than 700 miles since completion of the restoration this exceptional Type 2 is ready for Big Sur, the Oregon coast, the Rocky Mountains, or wherever your adventures may lead. It is now offered with refurbishment records and a clean title.
