1965 Lotus Elan S2

This 1965 Lotus Elan S2 is a frame-off restored example of a model commonly cited for upholding Colin Chapman’s “Simplify, then add lightness” philosophy. Purchased new and kept through 2015 by its first owner, the car underwent a complete refurbishment in 2012 that was later completed by subsequent ownership. The restoration included a full repaint, engine rebuild, chassis overhaul, and interior refresh. New carpets, upholstery, and dash components were fitted, and the result is a car that may look and run even better than when it rolled off the assembly line 60 years ago. Additional changes include an upgraded water pump, front plate, ignition system, and fuel pump.

The Lotus Elan Series 2 was a straightforward sports car that combined lightweight construction with an intuitive driving feel. Its fiberglass body housed a 1.6-liter twin-cam inline four-cylinder engine and paired it with a 4-speed manual transmission. Two unique design quirks for early Series 2 models were round taillights and frameless side windows. While original features were limited, this Elan’s Simpson lap belts, a Becker Europa AM/FM stereo, and Pyle door speakers provide updated amenities without compromise to spartan of-the-era aesthetics. Four-wheel disc brakes and independent suspension, pop-up headlights, and dual Weber 40 DCOE carburetors deliver driving engagement bar none.
