1968 Porsche 911L — Single-Family Owned
Overview
Limited to just 499 examples for the US market, the Porsche 911L (L standing for ‘Luxe’) was the US equivalent of the short wheelbase European-market 911S. The car was purchased new by a US Service Member and remained in the same family for over 56 years until 2024. Extensive records were kept for the car, benefiting from military precision, including every document, manual and invoice pertaining to the vehicle. Adding to its exclusivity, the model was built only for the 1968 model year, and was at the time the most expensive Porsche sold in the United States.
This 1968 Porsche 911L featured on Sotheby’s Motorsports presents in White over a Black leather interior. Extensive documentation and literature kept on file for this Porsche illustrates the diligent care and attention that it has received under single-family ownership since first delivered until its recent acquisition by the seller in 2024. The thorough documentation includes the original Porsche maintenance record booklet with dealer stamps, era-specific owner’s manuals/supplements, and multiple service invoices dating as far back as 1968. The documentation shows this Porsche remains in original condition and has never seen a restoration, presenting as it left the factory. Comprehensive paint meter readings, viewable in the gallery, illustrate the original nature of the finish. Provenance and preservation of this caliber is rarely seen even with the most prestigious examples, underscoring this cars unique pedigree.
Exterior features include an extremely rare set of 5 factory-correct 5.5x15 Porsche "heart" wheels, external twin mirrors, fog lamps, tinted glass, and various chrome trim sections throughout the body. Interior highlights include headrests for both the driver and front passenger seats, a raised steering wheel, air conditioning system, and a Blaunpunkt AM/FM radio. The 2.0L rear-mounted flat-six engine drives the rear wheels through a ‘Sportomatic’ automatic transmission. No major modifications are present, remaining true to its original character. This level of authenticity, combined with the excellent condition of the original White bodywork and Black upholstery, emphasize the long-term preservation of this car’s original form to the present date.
Recent extensive service ensures this example is turn-key ready for any collector or enthusiast. Between August 2021 and May 2025, the vehicle underwent extensive mechanical servicing to maintain optimal performance. In August 2021, the fuel system was thoroughly cleaned, including draining and replacing fuel components, while several gaskets and oil lines were renewed, and the engine oil and filter were replaced. In April 2025, major brake and ignition system work was completed, including rebuilding the front calipers, replacing rear hydraulic hoses, refreshing brake fluid, and servicing ignition components and carburetors. Finally, in May 2025, N.A.R.W. performed an engine tune-up, oil service, front ride height adjustment, and repairs to the parking brake, concluding with a full check of brakes, battery, and lighting systems.
Under 57,000 miles are displayed on the odometer at the time of cataloguing, verified by the extensive documentation included with the car. Seller’s Disclosure, service records, purchase documentation, build sheet, period literature, tool kit, car cover, battery charger, spare parts, and matching spare wheel accompany the sale of this ‘survivor’ example, the last year of the short wheelbase Porsche 911 sports coupe.
