Overview

Based on Plymouth’s mid-size Road Runner model, the Superbird was a modified, limited production variant developed for use in NASCAR racing to fulfill Chrysler’s homologation requirements to participate in the motorsports series. Along with its close association with NASCAR racer Richard Petty, the Plymouth Superbird stood out among traditional muscle car models by combining optimal aerodynamics with massive power output to produce one of the most capable performance cars of the 1970s era. Made only for a single model year, the rarity of the SuperBird, combined with its motorsports pedigree has established it as one of the most famous and sought-after classic American muscle cars today, with examples regularly fetching high premiums in the collectible market.

This 1970 Plymouth SuperBird - unit number 1480, is one of the most desirable examples of the famed muscle car, being one of the few that originally left the assembly line in the signature ‘Petty Blue’ paint finish. Various parts of the Superbird’s recognizable appearance are featured onboard, including the protruding front nose cone, front spoiler, ‘Plymouth’ and ‘Road Runner’ exterior decal, fender vents, and 15” Rally Wheels. Further adding to its allure is the 24” fixed rear wing, adorned with a signature by none other than Richard Petty himself, who drove his Superbird to achieve eight race wins in the 1970 NASCAR season. Provided photos showcase Petty signing his namesake on this car, an extreme rarity even among Superbird's. Interior highlights include front bucket seats with black and white vinyl upholstery, complemented with color-coordinated dashboard, door panels, and carpets in a blend of black vinyl upholstery and wood grain trim. Equipped amenities include a Pioneer AM/FM radio cassette and a heater.

Powering this Plymouth Superbird is a 440ci ‘Super Commando’ V8 with four-barrel carburetor, driving the rear wheels through a TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission and a Sure-Grip rear differential. This example additionally benefits from a refurbishment carried out under a previous keeper, consisting of an exterior respray and mechanical overhaul that has kept the appearance and running order of this Plymouth in optimal condition. A custom-fabricated front hood featuring Super Bee-style center hood scoops was also installed previously, but no significant modifications or changes were further performed to this SuperBird, retaining its largely original factory specification.

Just under 50,000 miles are presently displayed on the odometer. A key, the original front hood, this car’s original build (broadcast) sheet, factory literature, and associated period literature will accompany the sale.
