1971 | Mercedes-Benz 280SL
Overview
Part of the iconic W113 series, the 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SL was developed as a successor to the 230SL and 250SL models. Introduced at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show, the W113 series, commonly known as the "Pagoda" due to its distinctive concave hardtop, was designed by Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi. The 280SL was the final iteration of the series and featured notable advancements in performance and luxury. Under the hood, it was powered by a robust 2.8-liter inline-six engine, producing 170 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque, paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. The combination of its refined engine and advanced engineering made it a standout among its contemporaries.
The 280SL's development focused on delivering a balance of sportiness and comfort, hallmarks of a versatile grand tourer. The car's suspension system, which included double wishbones at the front and a swing axle at the rear, ensured a smooth and controlled ride. Safety was a significant consideration in the 280SL's design, incorporating features like crumple zones and a rigid passenger cell. The interior was appointed with high-quality materials, providing a luxurious driving experience. The model also introduced an improved braking system with power-assisted disc brakes on all four wheels. The W113 Mercedes-Benz 280SL remains a celebrated classic, known for its elegant design, engineering excellence, and timeless appeal.

The interior was completely replaced with an all-new tan leather interior, including the seats, carpets, and soft top. The original engine was removed and completely rebuilt, all components in the engine bay were replaced or overhauled, including but not limited to the installation of a new water pump, motor mounts, and belts. The suspension was also rebuilt and brand new brakes were installed. The car now presents in better-than-new condition, with only around 1,250 miles added since the restoration.
