1973 | Ford Capri RS2600
Overview
Manufactured by Ford of Europe to classify special competition parts for FIA racing, the RS2600 Capri remains a celebrated homologation “special” from a golden era of motorsport. The RS2600 Capri won every championship in its FIA division, including the 24 Hours of LeMans, European Touring Car, German Touring Car, and the Tour de France. Prominent drivers including Niki Lauda, Jochen Mass, Jackie Stewart, Jean Todt, Hans Joachim Stuck and Dieter Glemser piloted RS Capris to many victories during the heydays of European Touring Car Racing. Unforgettable are the Ford-BMW wars of the early 70’s when the Capri RS battled the mighty E9 BMW CSL. Built in Cologne, Germany, homologation street-legal RS models were never sold in the United States, and came from the factory with a high compression, mechanically fuel injected 2.6l V6 motor.
.
This 1973 Ford Capri RS2600 is one of perhaps a handful in the United States—further described by the seller as the only Le Mans Green/White example with a period correct wide body in the world. 3,522 examples of the street legal RS were built, and fewer than 100 are believed to have survived. One of the rarest road-going high performance German street cars of the 1970s, period motor journalists dubbed the 2600 RS “The Porsche killer.” Highly original, well maintained and mechanically sorted with complete owner history from new, this Capri’s owner documentation goes back to day one. This example was never raced or abused and was taken off the road with a non-op registration in 1991 and stored. All wide body parts, the rear wing and the rare BBS E30 wheels are from Ford’s official RS Motorsport Program, approved and documented by German Tuv in the early 70’s. All four BBS 3-piece magnesium rims are factory Ford stamped.
.
A fascinating vehicle and a true racing legend, this European Ford has been registered and road licensed in California since 2019—and part of the seller’s personal collection since 2007. Rocker panel repair and a whole vehicle repaint in its original color was completed in Germany in 2018. Showing just over 37k km(~23k miles), this car’s clean California title, original German registration papers, and first title from 1973 are included in the sale. Eligible for most historic tours, shows, and events worldwide, this auction presents the extremely rare opportunity to own a genuine European RS2600 in the United States.
