1979 | Porsche 930 Turbo
Overview
The Porsche 930 emerged in 1975 as the next step forward in Porsche's renowned 911 model, integrating turbocharging technology for the first time in the company's production car lineup. Boasting a robust 3.0-liter flat-six engine, the 930 Turbo was capable of delivering 260 horsepower, a significant leap from its naturally aspirated counterparts. The car's distinct design featured widened rear wheel arches and a large rear spoiler, which earned it the now well-known 'whale tail' nickname. This design enhanced the vehicle's aerodynamics and helped to cool the engine, enclosing a horizontally situated radiator and an intercooler in later models. Porsche equipped the 930 with a four-speed manual transmission and implemented larger four-wheel disc brakes to handle the increased power, ensuring performance and safety.
For the 1979 model year, the Porsche 930 Turbo underwent a crucial upgrade by introducing a larger 3.3-liter engine, further elevating its performance. This improved model generated a substantial 300 horsepower, courtesy of enhanced displacement and an intercooler—boosting power with increased air density entering the engine. The 1979 930 also featured a refined 'whale tail' spoiler, which was larger and more integrated into the bodywork, improving aesthetics and functionality. Porsche's attention to detail extended to suspension and braking systems, upgraded to match the car's heightened performance capability.
