1982 | Toyota BJ40 Land Cruiser

Now offered for auction on Sotheby’s Motorsports is this unique 1982 Toyota BJ40 Land Cruiser, which has previously undergone a top-to bottom, frame-off restoration by classic off-road specialist Legacy Overland in Danbury, Connecticut. Renowned as a premier off-road powerhouse, Legacy Overland brings some of the best 4x4 builds to market, with this truck being no exception. Finished in a gray exterior with a white hardtop roof and a black interior,  the restoration performed has added a number of aesthetic and functionally-enhancing modifications to bring it to modern overlander standards, while preserving the original character of this classic Toyota 4x4. Just roughly 1000 miles have been accumulated on this BJ40 since it was acquired by its current caretaker approximately three years ago, and it remains in excellent condition to see further use for many miles to come. 

Power comes from a 4.2L Toyota HD-Series inline-six-cylinder turbodiesel engine (reportedly sourced from an 80-series Toyota Land Cruiser),  paired with a 4-speed manual transmission, sending power through a two-speed transfer case. Major mechanical systems were restored as part of the restomod process, including a rebuilt engine, transmission, differentials, electrical system, and engine cooling system - ensuring this classic 4x4 can deliver reliable and solid performance. Additional comforts like upgraded power steering allow this Land Cruiser to be more driver-friendly behind the wheel. 

The interior has been similarly overhauled - preserving this classic Toyota’s utilitarian character while adding modern comforts like a vegan leather interior with bucket sports seats in the front, enhanced Dynamat interior insulation, air conditioning/heater system, and a Bluetooth audio system with upgraded speakers, to name a few. 

Widely regarded as one of the most iconic 4x4 vehicles ever produced, many examples of the first iterations of the Land Cruiser restored to this high standard are becoming increasingly sought after by collectors, classic car appreciators, and off-road enthusiasts worldwide. This restomod example is offered with documentation of its no-expense-spared restoration by a classic 4x4 specialist and is ready for continued enjoyment both on and off the road, or any number of journeys its next keeper may have in store.
