1984 | Fully-Restored Renault R5 Turbo 2
Overview
Among standouts in the hot-hatch arms race of the early 1980s, French automaker Renault offered a wild card true to form. In homologating a mass-market offering for motorsport, the manufacturer ventured its ground-up approach a step further than competitors by reimagining its front-drive R5 as a mid-engine contender for Monte Carlo. Dubbed R5 Turbo, the new car arrived sans rear seat with output tripled and wide rear wheels shrouded by vented bodywork. Capturing the pinnacle of pre-4WD rally, the streetfighter warranted a Turbo 2 sequel produced from 1983-1986. Packing its predecessor’s grunt, the Turbo 2 achieved success at market in greater numbers, achieving lasting status as an icon of the era.
.
This 1984 Renault R5 Turbo 2 arrives freshened from restoration by marque specialist Alpine-America of Sainte-Madeleine, Quebec. Returned to its former glory, the no-expense-spared rotisserie process included a full 3-coat repaint in its original shade of red, hand-polished to Concours level. Before reassembly, all exterior trim previously painted red by the second owner was restored to its original black. A beige cloth interior, overhead console Veglia digital clock, Jaeger instrumentation, and Turbo 2 rear hatch/side-body graphics complete of-the-era charms.
.
During the restoration, this car’s turbocharged and intercooled 1.4L Cléon-Fonte engine was overhauled by the same restorer, along with its transmission and K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection. Currently fitted with Braid modular staggered wheels, reconditioned original metric alloy wheels are included in the sale. The Turbo 2 remains a unique and sought-after driving experience—equipped with 160hp when new, a 5-speed manual gearbox, and un-boosted steering. Showing a 6-digit odometer reading of 32,608 kilometers, this Renault is sold with a Seller’s Disclosure provided by the private owner. Please note that the winning bidder is responsible for all transport, importation, and subsequent title/registration costs.
