Overview

Among the most recognizable shapes of the 1970s and 80s, Ferrari's 308 left more than a generational impact, beginning with its Paris Auto Show debut in 1973. Its Pininfarina design was among the longest-serving of any prancing horse, running through model year 1989. The 308 and its later and improved sibling the 328's staying power buffered more than just sales.

The 308 / 328 saw Ferrari through a swan-song of pre-unibody construction while introducing world markets to fuel injection and antilock braking. Starting from the 308's trim three-liter V8, the 328's bump in displacement added 50 horsepower to a total of 260 through the end of production. Available in GTB or GTS targa configuration, appreciable differences exist between US and European-spec examples that when-new rang in a finale of the gray market era. Most notably, non-US cars featured abbreviated bumper fascia, and a ten horsepower increase gained via non-catalyzed exhaust.

This stunning example began life in Europe and recently underwent a comprehensive mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment by Connecticut-based marquee restorer Legacy Motorworks. The work addressed every aspect of the vehicle, leaving no system or bolt untouched. The result of this three year restoration project is a magnificent example of the model in better-than-new condition.

To begin the process, the car's body was completely disassembled and stripped down to its bare metal, allowing for a thorough inspection and precise bodywork. Expert metal fabrication was performed to address imperfections, ensuring the vehicle's structural integrity and aesthetic perfection. The car was then refinished in iconic Rosso Corsa, restoring its vibrant, original luster. Finally, the vehicle was carefully reassembled, with each component meticulously fitted to achieve flawless alignment and finish.

The suspension system has been completely overhauled, with components rebuilt where possible and others replaced with high-quality OEM parts, significantly improving handling and ride quality. The braking system has also been fully overhauled, with all hoses, discs, and calipers rebuilt or replaced for superior stopping power during high-speed driving. Additionally, the underbody has been thoroughly refurbished with rust-prevention treatments and reinforced structural elements, ensuring the vehicle's integrity and longevity.

The engine and transmission were both also removed, disassembled, and completely rebuilt. The engine rebuilding process began with a meticulous decarbonization and machining of the head and valves, an essential step to ensure the engine maintains its peak performance and blueprinting. This was followed by rebuilding or replacing all engine components including polishing and honing of key engine components. All rotating assembly was restored or installed new including valves, guides, bearings, seals, pistons, crankshaft, and camshaft - all aimed at recapturing the power and glory of the original Ferrari engine.  The ECU was rebuilt and re-soldered and the electronic fuel system overhauled and tuned. The gearbox was entirely rebuilt with new bearings and synchros and carefully reassembled. This driveline is simply better than ever.

The interior of this Ferrari 328 has been restored to perfection. The original interior was carefully removed, preserving the authenticity of each component. The seats were reupholstered in luxurious leather, matching the original design while offering enhanced comfort. The dashboard, steering wheel and trim were also re-upholstered, recapturing their original luster. Gauges were carefully cleaned and rebuilt while the odometer was reset at “0” to start the car off in its new life. An overhauled air conditioning system and an upgraded Blaupunkt retro-style, bluetooth enabled head unit provides for modern day creature comforts. Every detail, from the stitching to the gauges, was attended to with precision, ensuring the interior looks as it did when it first left the factory. The result is an immaculate and inviting cabin that complements the car's exterior and provides an unparalleled driving experience.

Overall, this example now presents in better condition than it did when it left the factory, and stands as a suburb testament to the iconic 328. Ferraris of this era have only seen appreciation in value over recent years, and this trend is set to continue, especially for examples of this caliber. No Ferrari collection can be considered complete without a superb example of a pre-unibody Prancing Horse, and this stunning specimen fits the bill in ideal fashion. Euro rarity, comprehensive restoration, striking visual appeal, and adrenaline-filled raw power combine here for the perfect addition to your collection. It is now offered with original factory literature, a third-party inspection, and a comprehensive series of photos documenting the restoration process.
