Overview

Understanding the 512 TR

Debuting in 1992 at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the 512 TR was the successor to the Testarossa. Known internally as the F110HB, the 512 TR is powered by the same 4.9 liter 180° V12 as the previous generation car. Power is up from 380 to 421HP, however, the larger improvement is in the power curve and delivery of said power, providing a much broader power curve over the previous version of the engine. Although the 512 TR may look similar to the previous generation Testarossa, every aspect of the car was upgraded and changed. A myriad of chassis upgrades were performed on the existing F110 platform - additional welding and strengthening beams were placed in the floor of the car, making the car 15% stiffer than its predecessor. The center of gravity is lower as well, and it is 90 lb lighter than the previous generation car. The numerous upgrades resulted in a large step up in performance, showcasing a zero to 60 dropped from 5.7 seconds to 4.8.

A number of other items were addressed, and many of the finer points include: a lighter chassis and body work, a new steering rack with more direct ratios, a new steering mount, redesigned shocks, a new limited slip differential, strengthened gearbox gearing, a new synchromesh set up, etc. The list is vast; this car is not merely a refresh of its predecessor, it is essentially a brand new vehicle.

The visual redesign of the car was handled by Pininfarina, who styled the predecessor as well. Interestingly, the 512 TR was one of the last Ferrari's produced with both the body styled and built by Pininfarina. Cars with a body built by Pininfarina are marked by a large F over the Pininfarina logo on the side of the car, as with this example.

The exterior redesign included rounding out some of the sharper edges of the prior Testarossa design, increased diameter cooling apertures, and a new wheel design. The wheels are now 18 inches, up from 16 inches on the original Testarossa.

The interior received a redesign as well, with a new steering wheel, larger, more accommodating seats, and overall better ergonomics than its predecessor.

This Example

This car, serial number 93091, is a 1994 model, and thus the last year of 512 TR production. It was delivered new in Germany, presented in classic Rosso Corsa paint with a Nero interior. It was then imported to Japan where it spent time before being imported to the Czech Republic in 2021. While there, it underwent a full service and significant restoration at approximately 17k kilometers, including paint work and a total mechanical overhaul touching all systems. Detailed photos of the refurbishment as well as records are viewable in the galleries above. After spending time in the Czech Republic, the car was then imported to the United States where it is currently located with the seller. The odometer now shows under 19,000 km (11,800 miles). Included with the car: all books, tools, keys, and the very rarely optioned Schedoni luggage. Although not original to this particular car, this is the correct luggage for a 512 TR. As a European specification car, this specimen is significantly lighter than its US spec counterpart.

Why to Buy

This particular example, serial number 93091, is a very complete car with an interesting history. It shows well, and shows low mileage while still allowing for enjoyment of driving.

The 512 TR is a car with iconic styling coupled with an enormous set of upgrades ergonomically, mechanically, and dynamically over its predecessor, without making sacrifices to comfort, reliability, or durability that the original Testarossa platform is known for. Additionally, the 512 Testarossa is the last production (or non-limited edition) mid-engine 12 cylinder Ferrari ever produced. It offers an experience that Ferrari cannot and will not produce again.

Note for California residents: This car may not meet California emissions requirements. Please consult your local DMV for further information on compliance.
