Longer lived than even the Elise, Lotus' Esprit was among the fabled race and sports car manufacturer's best-known offerings. From 1975 to 2004 the platform served as a public face for the company—undergoing rapid updates more akin to motorsport development than mass-market appeals. At its core, the fiberglass-bodied Esprit added aspects of practicality and everyday usability less familiar in late company founder Colin Chapman's previous catalog of vehicles.

 

Through the decades, Esprit variants claimed additional design credo headlined by a marquee of greats including Italdesign, Peter Stevens, Russell Carr, and Julian Thompson. Fewer than 11,000 of the lightweight mid-engined vehicles were produced over a 28-year run. All hand-built, the Esprit today is reflected on as a sports car that preserved its mission without compromise. 

  

Finished in Solid Black over Raven leather, this 1994 Lotus Esprit S4 is described by the selling dealer as among the lowest mileage examples known to exist, now showing just 441 miles. Its condition is further stated to reflect time spent in a notable 500+ vehicle collection from 2007-2023. S4 production (1992-1996) comprises just 625 vehicles in total. Hallmark features of the Thomson-era design include smoothed exterior contours, exaggerated aerodynamic bodywork, and a mid-mounted 264 horsepower turbocharged 2.2L power plant. A five-speed manual transmission provides deliberate delivery of power to the rear wheels, while power steering—a first for the model—directs sharp cornering ability.
