Seller's Introduction

The truck was purchased 21 years ago as a 40th anniversary gift. Now it is time for a new home.

Overview

The iconic G-Wagen, born from a collaboration between Mercedes-Benz, Steyr, and Puch, was initially crafted as a robust off-road vehicle. It was launched in 1979 and primarily used for heavy-duty tasks by the military and adventure enthusiasts, known for its formidable all-terrain prowess. Early models were basic, devoid of luxury, emphasizing functionality with various economical gas and diesel engines. Despite not being officially sold in the U.S., the G-Wagen gained entry through the gray market in the 1980s, with Europa International, a prominent importer, customizing and selling these vehicles to a growing set of enthusiasts. The G-Wagen's durability and stature seemed to climb inexhaustibly during those years, finally leading to global recognition after its landmark 1983 win in the grueling Paris-Dakar Rally.

In the 1990s, the G-Wagen underwent significant upgrades, integrating advanced features like anti-lock brakes and electronic locking differentials, enhancing safety and off-road capability. Responding to a growing demographic more interested in luxury than rugged terrain navigation, Mercedes introduced the more upscale V8-powered 500 GE in 1993. Subsequent years saw further revisions, including engine improvements, new models, and the introduction of modern amenities. The late 1990s and early 2000s marked the debut of additional innovative models and celebratory editions, with the vehicle's official entry into the U.S. market through the Mercedes-Benz dealer network in 2002. Despite its high price point, the American version of the G-Wagen, particularly the G500 model, was perceived as equally capable yet more reasonably priced than its earlier gray market counterparts, reflecting its enduring appeal among luxury off-road enthusiasts.

The 2002 G500 offered here is one of the earliest known US-model G-Wagens imported and has remained with one owner since new, now showing just over 16,500 miles on the odometer. Examples of this era rarely present in the remarkable condition in which this truck can be found, a testament to its meticulous care by the longstanding owner. The classic exterior styling is finished in black and features a matching front brush guard and rear enclosed spare tire carrier. Inside, comfort and luxury abound with heated and power-adjustable front seats upholstered in black leather. Wood veneer trim adorns the cabin, while digital infotainment and surround sound systems provide modern convenience. The truck is propelled by a 5.0L V8 capable of driving all four wheels through three electronically locking differentials, confirming its off-road prowess. This example represents the best of the original US-market G-Wagens and will make a stunning addition to any enthusiast's collection or a capable daily driver in equal measure. It is now offered at no reserve with a clean Carfax report, a third-party inspection report, and a clean Maryland title.
