2011 | 4k-Mile Single-Family-Owned Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
Overview
The Mercedes-Benz 300SL defined a new benchmark in automotive excellence beginning in 1954. Championed by famed importer Max Hoffman as a requisite sports-purpose offering, the new coupe arrived flaunting exotic “Gullwing” doors, over 200hp, and race-proven reliability. Coupe production extended through model year 1957, cementing the original 300SL as a rarified icon. Though living on in name only between SL-badged coupe and convertible offerings, over six decades came to pass before a true continuation in design paid homage to the original’s impact.
Introduced at the 2010 Frankfurt Motor Show, the first Mercedes-Benz Gullwing coupe of the new millennium made its debut as the SLS AMG. The new supercar touted massive 6.2L V8 motivation, lightweight construction, and lavish interior fare. Unique among its peers with clean-sheet styling and unquestioned build quality, elegance shone from every angle. Highly engineered with forged engine internals and dry-sump oiling plus carbon fiber and magnesium materials throughout, the SLS claimed a near-200mph top speed.
