Shelby American has long specialized in upfitting the best of Ford Performance. The aftermarket manufacturer’s expert tuning of late-model Mustangs reached new heights in 2017 with the limited reissue of a turnkey special dubbed Super Snake. Released to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Carroll Shelby’s original 1967 GT500 Super Snake, just 500 units were produced. All chassis began as Mustang GTs post-title, then subsequently built to order in manual or automatic configurations with up to 750 horsepower. No tribute in name only, the Super Snake delivered on its design brief as a wholly modern competition-ready sports car.

Upstaging even the 5.2L-powered GT350R, Shelby’s tuning of the new Super Snake demonstrated the intentionality and focus expected from one of the most recognized names in domestic high performance. At the high end, hardware chosen for the task at hand included forced induction, stiffened suspension, available widebody conversion, and modifications to braking and cooling systems in stride. Alongside improvements to engine management software and a wide range of mechanical fine-tuning, the car’s creature comforts benefitted from two-tone bucket seating, a revised wireless auxiliary gauge cluster, and model-specific door sill plates.
