Overview

Ford made waves at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show when it introduced the highly anticipated second generation of its renowned GT supercar. This new model, following the original GT’s discontinuation in 2006, demonstrated the automaker's ability to produce a cutting-edge, mid-engine supercar designed to excel in motorsports. Powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine, delivering 647 horsepower, and paired with a seven-speed Getrag dual-clutch transmission, the GT could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under three seconds and reach a top speed of 216 mph.

The new GT was a clear departure from its predecessor, which had drawn inspiration from the iconic 1960s GT40. The focus on reducing weight and enhancing aerodynamics resulted in a futuristic design featuring flying buttresses that directed airflow to critical components while increasing downforce. An adaptive suspension could lower the car by two inches, and the self-adjusting rear spoiler optimized aerodynamics. With Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, hydraulic power steering, and fixed sport seats, the GT prioritized a lightweight structure and driver engagement. Demand surged immediately, with Ford using a strict application process to select buyers, resulting in far fewer GTs being produced compared to the 2005–2006 models, with just 1,350 units planned through 2022.

The Carbon Series

In October 2018, Ford introduced the GT Carbon Series, a unique variant positioned between the standard GT and the track-focused Competition Series. Marketed as the lightest road-legal version of the GT, Ford emphasized its dual nature: track-capable yet ready to drive home afterward. Like other GT models, buyers had to undergo a selection process, with customization options tailored to their preferences.

The GT Carbon Series was a showcase of carbon fiber engineering, with the material used extensively across the body panels, hood, bumpers, doors, front splitter, rear diffuser, and more. This edition featured the most exposed carbon fiber of any GT, prominently displayed on the A-pillars and in the center stripes. It also incorporated 20-inch carbon-fiber wheels, a titanium exhaust system, and a polycarbonate rear hatch, reducing the car’s weight by approximately 40 pounds compared to the standard model. With a mid-mounted 3.5-liter V-6 engine upgraded to 660 horsepower, the Carbon Series delivered impressive performance, including a 0 to 60 mph sprint in 3.0 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 10.8 seconds at 134 mph.
