The Mercedes-Benz SL has long served as a defining benchmark in two-seat grand touring. Beginning with the 300SL racer turned road car of the 1950s, the platform never wavered in promoting The Best or Nothing in speed, handling, and durability. The model’s heritage inline-six lineup expanded to include V8 motivation by the 1970s, maintaining contemporary brawn alongside timeless styling. Into the new millennium, SL-badged coupes and convertibles enjoyed continued development among the marque’s most powerful and limited production offerings. For many, 2012 rang in the last iteration true in spirit to the original—and the last to feature six-cylinder power.
Internally designated R231, the car’s underpinnings claimed a high standard of luxury and performance. The SL450’s 364 horsepower and sub-5 second jaunt to 60mph belied ample tech and opulent comfort beneath a retractable hard top canopy. In its swan song, the sixth-generation SL arrived in Grand Edition guise for model year 2020.
