2021 | 400-Mile Ferrari 812 GTS
Overview
Introduction to the 812 GTS
The 812 GTS made its debut in 2021, 50 years after the last regular series production front engine V12 convertible Ferrari made its debut. That car was the 365/GTS Daytona Spider. Its spiritual successor is based on the 812 SuperFast coupe; the 812 GTS is a convertible version of the 812 Superfast, and is the first regular series front engine V12 convertible Ferrari after the Daytona Spider. It joins illustrious previous models with the same design architecture such as the 250 short wheelbase California, 275 GTS, and 330 GTS, among others. Unlike its predecessors, the GTS utilizes a folding power hard top that can be raised and lowered in less than 14 seconds. The roof only adds 162lbs over its coupe sibling, but the true beauty of this roof is a window behind the seats that can be lowered while the roof is up, bringing you closer to the glorious sound of the 789hp 6.5L V12 that powers the car, while still being able to keep the roof up. The engine is coupled to a 7-speed tight ratio dual clutch gearbox, built by Getrag, which has 6% shorter gear ratios than in the previous model; thus making the car even punchier, and more eager.

The 812 GTS was the most rigid front engine convertible V12 Ferrari to date. The floor, specific to the GTS, is stiffened to combat chassis Flex, and a new welding technique was used in the floor and body of the car. Subsequently, the chassis is 35% stiffer than that of the 575 Superamerica, its most recent predecessor. The 6.5L V12 powering the 812 GTS is carried over from the 812 Superfast. The engine which boasts a massive compression ratio of 13.5:1, and an 8900 rpm redline, is the last of a truly amazing dynasty. Its competitors from Lamborghini (the Revuelto) and Aston Martin (the Vanquish) use hybridization and turbos respectively while the GTS uses neither; it is purely a naturally aspirated V12. This engine, introduced in the Enzo (as a 6.0 liter variant), named tipo F140B, has gone through multiple iterations. It is designated F140GA in the 812 GTS, modified yet again, it is still in production in the Ferrari 812 Competizione and 812 Competizione A.
Benefiting from virtual wheelbase 2.0 (Ferraris name for their rear wheel steering system), the system was further tweaked from the 812 Superfast coupe, to make it even more refined and integrated into the chassis Dynamics. A further development of side slip control dubbed SSC 3.0 is integrated into the car as well which it shares with the 812 Superfast.
