1972 | Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona
Overview
Understanding the “Daytona”
Debuted at the 1968 Paris Auto Salon, the 365 GTB/4 “Daytona” was powered by a 4.4 liter naturally aspirated Columbo-designed V12, producing 352hp mated to a five-speed manual transaxle. The combination of its low coefficient of drag, a powerful engine, and relatively light chassis contributed to a top speed capability of 174 mph, making it the world's fastest road car. Produced from 1968-1973, Ferrari only manufactured 1,284 examples, making the car rare than even a later F40. The Daytona’s Pininfarina styling was penned by Leonardo Fioravanti, who also designed the F40.

The car was never formally referred to by Ferrari as the “Daytona.” The story goes, the original intention was to name the car “Daytona” after the famous 24 Hours of Daytona race where Ferrari had claimed a clean-sweep victory the year prior. Whit no “Y” character in the Italian alphabet, the car was known internally as the “Daiton”. This was leaked early to the press and a joke was made of it. Enzo was not only embarrassed, but incensed that the name leaked, thus the car's name was changed to 365 GTB/4.
The phrase “Gran Turismo,” or GT, was actually popularized by Enzo Ferrari himself, to describe a car capable of covering great distances at high speed in comfort; the 365 GTB/4 epitomizes this sentiment. Sprung and dampened relatively soft by modern standards, the interior is covered in leather and well insulated. The engine delivers incredible power at low rpm and the fuel tank is a massive 33 gallons.
Although production began in 1968, the first US specification cars were not introduced until 1970. In 1971, shortly into the US production run, there was a change to regulations in the United States, forcing Ferrari to abandon the clear perspex covers over the headlights. This resulted in pop-up headlights in the United States for the 365 GTB/4. There were several production updates to the car throughout its life, most notably between ’71 and ’72 model years.
