1974 BMW 2002tii Alpina A4S 5-Speed

This 1974 BMW 2002tii Alpina A4S represents the early rise of the Bavarian BMW tuner, overhauling the excellent BMW 2002tii platform into a rare and potent sports sedan. The Garnet Red Metallic exterior was repainted with a ceramic coating in 2018, and graphics were added to properly reflect its status as an authentic Alpina model. There’s no mistaking where it received extra attention on the inside, thanks to Recaro sport seats emblazoned with neon green and blue stripes. It’s a fascinating mix of vintage sport design and whimsical German flair, with everything from a Pioneer Component stereo system to a twin exit center exhaust. With 31k Kilometers (~19k miles) on the odometer and world-traveler status, it’s available from its seller in Phoenix, Arizona.

The BMW 2002tii was the top trim available, apart from the iconic Turbo model. Alpina modified the factory version, and the exceedingly rare A4S model was the pinnacle. Its 5-speed manual brought three pedals ideally spaced for heel-and-toe shifting on spirited drives through the Black Forest. Under the hood, the Alpina-specific 2.0-liter I4 engine was rated at 195 horsepower—even more than the 2002 Turbo's 175—all from a car that weighed around 2,300 pounds. The result is a power-to-weight ratio rivaling sports cars built more than 20 years later. The A4S looked like an ordinary BMW, but for those in the know, it was anything but.
